Gakundu Washing Station sits in the Embu region on the southeastern foothills of Mount Kenya, at an altitude of 1650m. Blessed with fertile soil and a cool climate, conditions here are ideal for coffee, and the coffee grown in this region carries a powerful richness that sets it apart as a special origin compared with other areas of Kenya.
Some 1262 farmers living nearby bring their cherries to Gakundu Washing Station. The area is covered in fertile reddish-brown volcanic ash soil, which holds the nutrients best suited to agriculture. Temperatures range from 13 to 25 degrees Celsius, giving the temperature swing that coffee needs to ripen well.
