Sitting at 1,700 to 1,800 meters on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya, the eastern part of the Kirinyaga region is one of the most important growing areas in Kenya's coffee industry, with well-draining volcanic-ash soils from Mount Kenya and fertile ground rich in the organic matter that coffee loves.
The Karimikui Washing Station of the Rungeto Farmers' Cooperative serves some 500 members from the surrounding area, who deliver the cherries they have picked that day. In Kenya, production follows time-honored, meticulous traditions, and before delivery the cherries must be hand-sorted as shown in the photo on the right.
The delivered coffee cherries are then processed using the abundant water drawn from nearby rivers, passing through the stages of pulping, fermentation, and washing.
With aromas of wine and spice, a fine bright acidity, body, and sweetness, along with notes of berry and apricot, this is a well-balanced, high-quality Kenya.
